Spotify Tests NFT Features
The music streaming platform, Spotify, is reportedly surveying current users about web3 and NFT’s and trialing an NFT promotion feature. This is the latest tech giant to announce their upcoming involvement with NFTs. Last week, Meta announced that Instagram is planning to integrate NFTs soon.
Music and other audio based NFTs have been attempted with no major mainstream success. Spotify seems to currently only be testing a feature for promoting NFTs without plans of a marketplace. With the resources and customer base of an already established music platform, we may soon see the next era of NFTs.
Spotify entered the metaverse earlier this month by introducing Spotify Island on Roblox. Roblox is a popular online platform that allows users to play games created by other users for free (most games include in-game optional purchases, usually aesthetics). Spotify Island will allow for artists to partner with Spotify on in-game merch creation and connect with their fans.
Roblox already has an in-game currency called Robux, so it’s difficult to predict whether they’ll be implementing NFTs or blockchain technology officially on the platform. PlayDapp Town was released on Roblox as a test in June 2021 with NFTs integrated in the virtual world. The NFTs allowed players to mint new characters, items, pets, and costumes. PlayDapp is a South Korean blockchain company. PlayDapp is now hosting its own games and marketplace on both the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains.
