Google to Hire PayPal Exec to Lead Crypto Payments
Google has hired Arnold Goldberg, a former PayPal executive to run Google’s payment division including Google Pay to help accelerate the company’s push into financial services including cryptocurrency compatibility.
Bill Ready, Google’s president of commerce, stated in an interview with Bloomberg that “crypto is something we pay a lot of attention to. As user demand and merchant demand evolves, we’ll evolve with it.”
The announcement comes as part of the company’s greater focus on being a “comprehensive digital wallet” that will include digital tickets, airline passes, vaccine passports, and more.
While Google still does not yet accept crypto for transactions directly, Ready stated that the company is looking forward to more partnerships with crypto companies. Google already has partnerships with Gemini, Coinbase, and Bakkt to allow purchasing of crypto and the use of cryptocurrency as payment using a Coinbase debit card.
