Germany Posts Bitcoin Auction

  • German law enforcement agencies faced a significant uptick of interest in their websites after posting an auction of seized bitcoin on Monday.

  • The Justice Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state in the nation, publicized an auction of Bitcoin equaling to “an 8 digit number” euro amount after seizing the currency used in cyber-crimes by criminals.

  • The website saw an influx of over 4,000 new users register in the last few days to participate in the auction. German officials cannot simply sell seized assets including Bitcoin on the market, and are required to auction the items like any other stolen good.

  • The minimum bid was 42,400 euros ($49,281) and the first bid offered was 56,060 euros. Bitcoin is currently valued at about $63,000 at the time of publication.
