Facebook Renames Itself Meta, as it Gears Up to Evolve into its Next Form

Facebook the infamous social media giant, has announced that it is renaming itself, Meta.

We reported earlier this month on rumors circulating suggesting that the company was looking to rebrand itself, moving away from the recent bombardment of bad publicity their platform has garnered them.

Zuckerberg in an interview with The Verge earlier this month made comments on how Facebook would like to change the perception of them as "just a social media company.", and it seems like this is the first step in the initiative.

The move to Meta will see Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and What’s App, all Facebook-owned brands, now be overseen under this new umbrella corp.

Facebook bought Oculus back in 2014 for $2 billion, Zukerburg at the time said “Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow,” “Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.”

At the time Oculus had only been in the wild for 2 years with its Kickstarted Oculus 1 headset and had a handful of experiences that validated early adopters’ purchases. Fast forward to today, the innovative tech company has 3 SKU’s of VR devices, with The Oculus Quest not only being the best selling virtual reality related device of all time but is one of the first to be usable without the need for an external PC.

The VR branch of Meta will be the most important, with the Keynote held today focusing on how Meta is not only a name change but a complete restructuring of the company focus into the Metaverse. For this to be realized Oculus will have to be much more than just the “best selling VR device of all time, it will need to become as synonyms as a computer or phone.
