ETH 2.0 Rebrands to Consensus Layer
The Ethereum Foundation has released a blog post indicating that the development group will shift away from using the “Eth1” and “Eth2” terminology and move towards using “execution layer” and “consensus layer”.
Eth1 -> execution layer
Eth 2-> consensus layer
Execution layer + consensus layer = Ethereum
The blog post highlights several reasons for the rebranding of the upgrade, including the often questioned reasoning behind an “ETH2” and the mental hurdles new users go through when wondering if they will need to buy new ETH or upgrade their existing assets.
Other reasons behind the rebrand include greater inclusivity for new and existing users, scam prevention, and staking clarity. Keeping the name “ETH” even throughout the upgrade will allow users to reliably know that their asset remains ‘fundamentally’ the same in terms of what it is and in expected value.
The foundation states that the rebranding will not affect the upgrade roadmap and will not impact any of the expected features.
