Woman Sued by Crypto.com After Accidently Receiving $10 Million
According to reports, a woman accidentally received $10.5 million from the crypto exchange Crypto.com through a mistaken transaction and then allegedly went on an extravagant spending spree.
The woman and her sister are now on the run from the law, 7NEWS reported Tuesday.
A Crypto.com spokesperson confirmed to Decrypt that the case is now “before the courts” but did not speak further on the matter.
Thevamanogari Manivel asked for a refund of $100 in May 2021 for her Visa debit card with Crypto.com, but the Singapore-based exchange mistakenly sent her one hundred thousand times more than she asked for, 7NEWS reported, citing court documents.
Rather than inform the exchange of its mistake, Manivel and her sister Thilagavathy Gangadory reportedly did what I believe most would: go shopping. The extravagant spending spree included a $1.35 million five-bedroom home as a gift and the shifting of 10.1 million funds into a joint account.
It took the company seven months to realize its mistake when an audit in December 2021 discovered that a Crypto.com employee had input the account number into the payment section and sent the funds.
Crypto.com is taking legal action against the sisters, with the Victoria’s Supreme Court ordering the house to be sold and the funds returned.
“There’s no doubt that if you saw that in your account, you would know it shouldn’t be there, and the onus is actually on you to actually call the sender and to say look, that shouldn’t have come into my account,” Justin Lawrence from Henderson and Ball Lawyers told 7NEWS.
“If you’re withholding property of someone else, you’re effectively holding property by deception, you’re not entitled to it, you need to give it back.”
While following the law is always recommended, I can not knock these sisters for their actions. A million dollars is a lot of money, ten million, and you would've never found me.
