Texas has been one of the most popular spots in the US for Bitcoin mining operations to open up after the crackdown by China. This sent the entire mining market into a sell off as companies started looking for new locations of operation. The United States now accounts for 35% of the global Bitcoin hash rate which is a measure of the computational power per second used when mining. Other countries like Canada have seen a large increase in new BTC mining companies.
One of the owners of Lancium stated:
“On December 21st Lancium announced its $2.4 billion plan which will span 20 years of total construction to build a massive data center. The Carbon-neutral company is focusing on renewable energy as well as hosting a BTC mining farm on the 800 acres that they will be building on. The facility will be capable of 200 megawatts and will be able to scale up to 1- gigawatt.
This will also be bringing some jobs to the town with the company aiming for 57-full time jobs and other big aspirations. “Over the next 20 years, this project is estimated to bring $993.4 million in total projected economic impact to Taylor County and the City of Abilene.”
Bitcoin mining is becoming very popular for those that have the money to fund such a large scale operation. Earlier in the year it was criticized for being bad for the environment even though energy consumption does not equal carbon emissions. Going forward more and more miners will be powered by some form of renewable resources.”
