“We just have to be brave... But not too brave or else Matt Damon will come and take all our money," said characters on the animated series, hinting at the crypto market downturn. Read the full article by Turner Wright

Nobody is safe from being trolled by South Park and they have been putting some hits out on the crypto space too. NFTs were their first target in one of the recent Pandemic specials and now they are taking aim at the Matt Damon crypto.com commercial. The ad released about three months ago or pretty close to where the market hit its top.

“My dad said he listened to Matt Damon and lost all his money…” “Yes, everyone did! But they were brave in doing so!” was one of the quotes from the episode. This probably rings true for a lot of people since the market cap for all cryptocurrencies lost $500 billion dollars since that commercial started airing. Another quote from the commercial was “Fortune favors the bold” was criticized by Stephen Colbert on CBS’ The Late Show saying “You never rely on groundhogs for advice, no matter how convincing they are when they pitch you crypto with Matt Damon.”

Cryptocurrencies have been growing in the media space for the last couple of years especially on social media. There are niche communities in the broader space of crypto where people think Bitcoin is the best and only talk BTC or only invest in NFTs because they think they’re going to make it because of that. It will be coming to a point where you start seeing it in movies with some NFT brands having there art or avatars in movies with the help of Guy O’seary.

It is funny but South Park does have a point where these commercials can easily shoot themselves in the foot with an ad like this. It came down to timing and with the price faltering it makes it easier to poke fun at. It will be interesting to see if someone steps in and puts a halt to advertising tactics that make people feel like they are missing out when it comes to this specific sector.
