eBay Launches Sports Illustrated NFT Collection

The giant e-commerce platform has announced a partnership with the NFT platform, OneOf, to launch an NFT collection featuring animated, 3D depictions of athletes from past Sports Illustrated covers. The collection started off with multiple tokens featuring Wayne Gretzky- a Canadian former professional ice hokey player and former head coach. The tiers available range from green, gold, platinum, and diamond (from lowest to highest value and rarity). The Green tier NFTs are going for $10 USD, Gold tier: $25, Platinum: $100, and Diamond: $1,500.

The collection’s webpage on eBay states that the Wayne Gretzky drop is the fourth in the Sports Illustrated collection, but the previous drops are difficult to find. They seem to neither be available on eBay nor OneOf. The contract address is 0x2a1B9ba25eAf78b5439A9bd635ef4517001B9dc9, on the Polygon network, but since it’s only available on eBay, only credit/debit card payments are accepted.
This is strange for NFTs since they’re supposed to be connected to a crypto wallet to show ownership and blockchain history. It’s likely that eBay will provide a link upon purchase with instructions for linking or claiming to their Polygon wallets. This unlikely route will simplify the NFT purchasing processes for new or non-crypto users.
