Disney’s application to patent a “virtual-world simulator in a real-world venue” has been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The renowned entertainment company has filed and been approved for a patent on December 28th, 2021, that copyrights Disney’s attempts to create personalized interactive attractions for visitors to it’s theme parks. The patent was originally filed on July 15th, 2020.

In the patent, Disney describes the technology as a “computing platform having a hardware processor and a memory storing a software code, a tracking system communicatively coupled to the computing platform, and a projection device communicatively coupled to the computing platform. The hardware processor is configured to execute the software code to obtain a map of a geometry of a real-world venue including the virtual-world simulator, to identify one or more virtual effects for display in the real-world venue, and to use the tracking system to track a moving perspective of one of a user in the real-world venue or a camera in the real-world venue. The hardware processor is further configured to execute the software code to control the projection device to simulate a virtual-world by conforming the identified one or more virtual effects to the geometry of the real-world venue from a present vantage point of the tracked moving perspective.”

According to the patent, physical headsets or goggles will not be necessary to see the images. Visitors could be tracked throughout a theme park using their smartphones or other devices, where projections could be deployed to provide personalized interactions along with hidden speakers to provide new levels of immersion.

These actions come as Disney continues to experiment with innovative technologies to enhance their customer’s experience. During it’s Q4 2021 earnings call in November 2021 CEO Bob Chapek elaborated on the company’s efforts to remain competitive in a new digital age, hinting at “a time when we’ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling without boundaries in our own Disney metaverse.”
