Assassin Creed Creators Wants to Make Blockchain Games
Ubisoft the veteran publishers of games such as Assassins Creed, Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon, Far Cry, etc, had their annual Q2 earnings call, bringing a slump but this didn’t upset investors. due to Ubi also sliding in the blockchain.
The blockchain was brought up multiple times throughout the call, mentioning its investment in Animoca Brands, who are self-described “global leader in branded blockchain gaming.”
Animoca is currently developing Revv Motorsport, Revv Racing, and Formula E: High Voltage, all utilizing the Revv token enabling players to own in-game items and NFTS. Items within these games will be transferable across multiple games, as well as being tradable from user to user.
Ubisoft not only has a stake in Animoca but is also a founding member of the Blockchain Game Alliance and has been looking into the new tech since early on in its life.
CFO Frédérick Duguet called the new move to blockchain gaming a “revolution”. CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed during the call that the company not only wanted to invest in games already being made but also was looking into setting up an internal studio aimed at developing games within the blockchain.
Many within the game industry see these moves as exploitative, because of the frenzy of bad publicity any and all crypto-related games have garnered these past few months. Citing its “environmental impact” and “scams” that are rampant throughout.
These arguments are hard to combat, not to them being valid because only half of this is true, but how can we innovate within an industry in love with staying in the past and hating on any changes.
"[Blockchain] will enable more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it's going to grow the industry quite a lot," Duguet said.
This growth is what scares avid gamers, they are afraid that their niche is now mainstream, but I’m sorry to break the news, Video Games are already mainstream! Let others come in and try to make changes that they believe will help us, who knows what could happen.
