The famous news outlet The Associated Press is moving to decentralize its network of over 1,300 newspapers and broadcasts. Today it was announced that Chainlink Labs would be partnering with the company and providing blockchain technology to secure its news and data.
On November 2nd The Ap will tap Chainlinks smart contracts to streamline reporting election results, sports scores, quarterly reports, and much more. All this data will now be verified on-chain to make sure it’s actually coming from the news outlet.
"Smart contracts need simple binary data in order to decide whether conditions are met in order to execute themselves." Dwayne Desaulniers, AP’s director of blockchain and data licensing, told Decrypt. "It's much easier to push out simple data than complicated sentences that would be more challenging for smart contracts to interpret and understand."
This isn’t the first time the AP has used the blockchain, first utilizing the technology to publish “tamper-proof news” such as when they projected Joe Biden would be the next president of the United States back in November of 2020. Everpeida was the partner for this first foray, the blockchain company specializes in running a decentralized-encyclopedia.
"Anything can be published to the blockchain," said Desaulniers, "but I think it makes a substantial difference when developers see the data coming from a source like the AP which has been in the business for 175 years."
The AP said they chose Chainlink due to its history of making its programs easily accessible, programmable, monetizable, and compatible with most blockchain tech.
