Women in Web3

It is International Women’s Day and women are ready to leave their mark on the Web3 space.

Since today is International Women’s day it is important to note how the Web3 space can be more inclusive. Web3 or the decentralized web is currently dominated by male developers and creators. In fact, only 16% of NFT projects are created by women. A lot of the space is “tech bros” as some would call them but there is still a lot of time for this gap to close as the space is still very new.

Women-led projects such as World of Women or Staxx Invaders are great examples of how women can take the driver’s seat in this growing space. World of Women is currently one of the most well-known NFT projects on the market and it is not just because they were made by a team of women; however, it is because of what they have built. There are so many more opportunities beyond just the art side of things.

Popular Ethereum domain service, Unstoppable Domains, has a woman as their senior vice president in Sandy Carter. She made the move to Web3 because of the lack of diversity in her time with Amazon Web Services.

“As I transitioned to Unstoppable Domains, I was disappointed in Web2 and how much lack of diversity I found. Oftentimes 20% of the room would be women at conferences. It has also been shown that less than 5% of entrepreneurs in the Web2 space are female. This was mind-blowing” said Carter.

Rarible is one of the bigger NFT marketplaces other than OpenSea. They are also hoping to drive more participation by women by promoting women-led projects on their marketplace to celebrate International Women’s day. More initiatives like this are needed to continue diversifying the space but Megan Kaspar, co-founder and managing director of Magnetic, thinks that this will happen when there are more female-related products available. Things like fashion and beauty, Kaspar believes, will bring more female attention to Web3.

NFTs are not the only thing that can be done with Web3; however, they are what has brought Web3 to the masses. This is just a starting point for all people getting into the space but also gives women a place to leave their mark in the early stages. As crypt continues to grow, more women will be involved as some leave their Web2 positions for higher ranking positions in Web3 like Sandy Carter of Unstoppable Domains did.
