Sotheby’s Holds First Auction in Ethereum, Banksy Sells For 1,696 ETH

  • Sotheby’s is one of the largest brokers of fine art and collectibles and their most recent live auction was in ETH. People were tuned in to the auction live from Decentraland too.

  • Banksy was the artist featuring two pieces at the auction. The first one started at 898 ETH and ended up selling for 1,696 ETH or $6.8 million.

  • Banksy is known for his street work and anti-establishment art and it makes it fitting that he was the first to accept cryptocurrency at an auction from Sotheby’s. This is another step in the direction of integration for NFTs in the fine arts space.

  • Art and the metaverse will benefit greatly from NFTs in the future and stories like this show that. Not only was the artist paid in crypto but you had people in the VR world watching in the Decentraland metaverse.
